Honestly, I'm not sure yet; "the effects... on student learning" is
awfully broad and I'm not sure what I mean by that yet, and I've only
been in grad school for a month so I barely know how to help with
research in this area, let alone design it. :)

That having been said, it's likely to be mixed methods; I've found
myself drawn towards qualitative (particularly ethnographic) research
since 2007 when I got to take Susan Silbey's qualitative methods class
at MIT, but there's a *lot* of good quantitative stuff to mine in the
FOSS world.
